AB The value of using saliva for HIV screening in the community in India
was examined. Saliva of 42 HIV +ve cases (confirmed by W.B./alternate
ELISA) was tested by Abbott ELISA method using OMNISAL kits for salivary
collection. HIV antibody was positive in all the 42 cases giving 100%
sensitivity and specificity. This method is ideally suited for a
populous hot tropical country like India for the obvious advantages of
speed of specimen collection, avoidance of hazard of bleeding and needle
disposal, acceptability to children and allowing delay between specimen
collection and testing. Further details will be discussed in the
presentation.
